Philadelphia Eagles (1-4) vs. Washington Redskins (3-1)

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,This Week's Matchup Report by admin on Friday 14 October 2011 at 10:04 pm

The Eagles are limping right now as they have lost four games in a row.  The Redskins are coming off a bye week, so they have had two weeks to get ready for the Eagles.  These teams split their two games last year, which each team winning on the road.  Here is a look at the matchups in this game:

When the Eagles have the ball:  Michael Vick had a game for the ages in his last trip to Washington.  He completed 20 of 28 passes (71.4%) for 333 yards with 4 TD passes and 0 INTs.  He also carried the ball 8 times for 80 yards (10.0 ypc) with 2 TD runs in his last meeting with the Redskins as the Eagles rolled up 592 total yards on offense against them.  This is a new look and really good defense that the Redskins are sporting this year, so the Eagles are likely going to have to do some things different in this game.  The Redskins have 15 sacks already in their first four games of the year, so they are going to put pressure on Vick and he’s going to have to make some throws from the pocket.  Opposing QBs only have a 73.5 QB Rating against the Redskins, so Vick is going to have to be careful with the football.  The WRs (Jason Avant, Desean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin) are going to have to be willing to take some hits in this game.  Lesean McCoy has been outstanding so far this year and the Redskins are giving up 4.3 yards per carry, so he has a chance to have a nice game in Washington.

When the Redskins have the ball:  The Redskins are going to come out running the ball with Ryan Torain, Tim Hightower and Roy Helu getting their fair share of carries against an Eagles’ D that is allowing 140.2 yards rushing per game and a stunning 5.0 yards per carry!  The Redskins’ game plan is to try to control the clock and the football, so the Eagles better stop their running game this Sunday.  The corners have played lousy for the Eagles so far this year, so Rex Grossman might make them pay this Sunday as long as he has time to throw the ball.  The Eagles have 16 sacks already this year and they are going to be coming after Grossman to try to force him into making some mistakes with the ball.

Philadelphia Eagles (1-3) vs. Buffalo Bills (3-1)

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,This Week's Matchup Report by admin on Wednesday 5 October 2011 at 8:56 pm

This is actually a pretty good matchup for the Eagles this weekend as they are catching the Bills coming off their first loss of the year.  This is going to be a high scoring team as neither of these teams are playing much D.  Here is a look at the matchups in this game:

When the Eagles have the ball:  This is going to be the first game that Michael Vick isn’t going to get beat up in.  The Bills only have 4 sacks this year, so Vick should be able to have enough time either to stay in the pocket or roll out and make some plays on the run.  Vick will have to pay attention to where the safeties are as they are ballhawks for the Bills.  That being said,  I look for him to take a lot of deep shots down the field to Jeremy Maclin and Desean Jackson as the Bills are allowing 275.5 yards passing per game so far this year.  The Bills have not stopped the run too well this year either as they are allowing 129.5 yards rushing per game and 4.9 yards per carry.  That means that Lesean McCoy is likely going to have a big day this Sunday.

When the Bills have the ball:  The Eagles will try to key on RB Fred Jackson of the Bills (369 yards rushing, 5.8 ypc) in this game.  The Eagles are giving up 139.5 yards rushing per game and 5.3 yards per carry so far this year!  Jackson is going to be a HUGE part of the offensive gameplan for the Bills this weekend.  The Eagles already have 15 sacks this year but Ryan Fitzpatrick has only been sacked 2 times, so something has to give.  If the Eagles get a good rush on Fitzpatrick, he will likely make some mistakes with the ball.  Maybe then the overhyped corners will start making some plays.

PREDICTION:  EAGLES 33, BILLS 24

Philadelphia Eagles (1-2) vs. San Francisco 49ers (2-1)

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,This Week's Matchup Report by admin on Friday 30 September 2011 at 12:29 pm

The Eagles have lost two games in a row and they need to right the ship this weekend in Philadelphia against the 49ers.  The 49ers are off to a good start because of their defense so far this year.  Here is a look at the matchups this Sunday:

When the Eagles have the ball:  The Eagles are in for a challenge this weekend against the Niners.  As much of the headlines as Michael Vick gets for his passing, the Eagles still are running the ball more than they are throwing it.  Lesean McCoy (345 yards rushing, 6.1 yards per carry) and Michael Vick (153 yards rushing , 6.4 yards per carry) are off to great starts running the ball, but something is going to have to give this Sunday, as the Niners are only allowing 62.7 yards rushing per game and 2.9 yards per carry.  Michael Vick isn’t likely to be himself in this game with his badly bruised right hand, as I don’t think he will be running much in this game.  The 49ers have 7 sacks this year, so Michael Vick would be smart to get rid of the ball sooner in this game, so that he won’t take as many hits.  He is going to need Jeremy Maclin, Desean Jackson and Jason Avant to catch more short passes in this game and make things happen after the catch.

When the 49ers have the ball:  The 49ers have been the most conservative team in the NFL so far this year and they are only averaging 213.7 yards per game (69.7 rushing, 144.0 passing).  Frank Gore has an ankle injury, so he might not play or have a smaller workload if he does give it a go.  Rookie Kendall Hunter’s workload is likely to increase whether or not Gore plays.  The Eagles are giving up 131.3 yards rushing per game and 4.9 yards per carry so far this year, so expect the Niners to run more than pass the ball.  Alex Smith has already been sacked 11 times this year, while the Eagles have sacked the QB 12 times.  That means that the Niners are likely going to throw the short stuff to TEs Vernon Davis and Delanie Walker a lot in this game.  The Niners aren’t going to challenge the Eagles’ corners as they have a lousy WRing corps.

PREDICTION:  EAGLES 20, 49ERS 17

Philadelphia Eagles (1-1) vs. New York Giants (1-1)

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,This Week's Matchup Report by admin on Thursday 22 September 2011 at 9:10 pm

The Eagles are looking to rebound from last weekend’s tough defeat at the hands of the Falcons.  They better be ready for a fight with the division rival New York Giants paying them a visit this weekend.  Here is a look at the matchups in this game:

When the Eagles have the ball:  I don’t look for the Eagles to change anything they do against the Giants this weekend.  Michael Vick was back at practice today and it looks like he will be ready to play this Sunday.  Vick completed 45 of 73 passes (61.6%) for 500 yards with 3 TD passes and 1 INT against the Giants last year.  He also carried the ball 24 times for 164 yards (6.8 ypc) with 2 TD runs against the Giants.  The Giants are going to be blitzing a lot from the edges to try to keep Vick in the pocket.  Still, the Giants are giving up 283.0 yards passing per game so far this year, so look for Vick to be able to get the ball to Jeremy Maclin and Desean Jackson quite a bit this Sunday.  The Eagles want to get out to a quick lead in an effort to get the Giants to quit running the ball, which is the Eagles’ weakness on D.  The Giants are only giving up 66.5 yards rushing per game and 3.0 yards per carry, so Lesean McCoy and Michael Vick will likely have to fight for every yard they get this Sunday.

When the Giants have the ball:  The Eagles have to find a way to stop Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs, as the Giants are going to try to be bullies this weekend.  The Eagles are giving up 146.0 yards rushing per game and 5.3 yards per carry, so the Giants are going to pound away at them with the running game.  If the Eagles bring their safeties closer to the line, that is when Eli Manning will go over the top with play action passes deep to Mario Manningham and Hakeem Nicks.  The Eagles have 9 sacks already this year and Manning has been sacked 7 times, so look for the Eagles to blitz a lot this Sunday and force Manning into making some big mistakes.

PREDICTION:  EAGLES 34, GIANTS 17

Philadelphia Eagles (1-0) vs. Atlanta Falcons (0-1)

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,This Week's Matchup Report by admin on Saturday 17 September 2011 at 4:56 pm

This will be Michael Vick’s first return to Atlanta as a starting QB since his six years in which he played with the Falcons.  Hopefully Vick will remember what team he plays for now.  The Falcons are a very dangerous and hungry team after getting pushed around by the Bears last weekend.  Here is a look at the matchups in this game:

When the Eagles have the ball:  The Eagles are likely not going to change one bit for the Falcons’ D tomorrow night.  Michael Vick will likely throw the ball quite a bit against a Falcons’ secondary that let Jay Cutler shred them last Sunday.  The Eagles have a nice edge at WR with Desean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin and Jason Avant against Falcons’ corners Brent Grimes and Dunta Robinson.  The Falcons’ O-Line might have a hard time keeping DEs John Abraham and Ray Edwards out of the backfield.  Something will have to give when the Falcons want to run the ball as they had 237 yards rushing (7.6 ypc) last weekend while the Falcons only gave up 88 yards rushing (3.3 ypc).  Middle linebacker Curtis Lofton is a heavy hitter and he will have his eyes on Lesean McCoy and Michael Vick (when he takes off running).

When the Falcons have the ball:  The run defense of the Eagles sucked last week as the Rams rushed for 154 yards (5.9 ypc) last week.  The Eagles’ front seven will have to step up or RB Michael Turner is going to go nuts running against them.  Turner had 100 yards rushing on only 10 carries (10.0 ypc) last weekend against the tough Bears’ D.  The Eagles should match up pretty well with Matt Ryan’s receivers.  Roddy White, Julio Jones and Tony Gonzalez will battle CBs Nnamdi Asomugha, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Asante Samuel tomorrow.  The Eagles will need to get a good pass rush after Matt Ryan, because if he has time to throw the ball he can do damage.

Philadelphia Eagles vs. St. Louis Rams

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,This Week's Matchup Report by admin on Friday 9 September 2011 at 10:50 pm

The Philadelphia Eagles loaded up in free agency and in the trade market after the lockout was lifted.  But, you don’t win championships on paper.  The Eagles are going to have their work cut out for them against a very young and hungry Rams team this Sunday in St. Louis.  Here is a look at the matchups in this game:

When the Eagles have the ball:  The Eagles are going to come out of the locker room throwing the football.  They want to get ahead of the Rams early in an effort to make them throw the ball against the Eagles’ taut secondary.  The Eagles are going to go right after the corners of the Rams by throwing the ball to wideouts Desean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin and Jason Avant.  If the offensive line starts having issues with pass protection, Vick will throw shorter passes to TE Brent Celek and RB Lesean McCoy.  Lesean McCoy, Ronnie Brown and Michael Vick are going to also attack the Rams’ D in the running game.  The Eagles are going to put some points on the board this weekend.

When the Rams have the ball:  The Eagles are hoping to put a lot of pressure on Sam Bradford with the front four.  The Eagles are going to likely cheat the safeties up a little bit to deal with RB Steven Jackson, as the Rams are going to be feeding him the football early and often this Sunday.  The Eagles hope that they contain the Rams’ RBs, so that they can force Sam Bradford to try to throw the ball against CBs Nnamdi Asomugha, Asante Samuel and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.

PREDICTION:  EAGLES 23, RAMS 20

Green Bay Packers (10-6) vs. Philadelphia Eagles (10-6)

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Playoffs,This Week's Matchup Report by admin on Saturday 8 January 2011 at 6:15 am

The Packers come into this game with a lot of confidence as they beat the Eagles 27-20 in Philly this year in the season opener.  A Clay Matthews’ hit on Kevin Kolb in this game is what sprung Michael Vick into action and the rest is history.  This will be a challenge for Michael Vick and Co. as the Packers are only giving up 15.0 points per game this year.  Here is a look at the matchups in this game:

When the Eagles have the ball:  The Eagles should come out running the ball a little more than usual as the Packers are giving up 114.9 yards rushing per game and 4.7 yards per carry this year.  Lesean McCoy could have a big game if the Eagles just feed him the ball.  The Eagles’ have to keep Clay Matthews out of the backfield or he’s going to possibly force Michael Vick into making some big mistakes.  Packers’ CBs Charles Woodson and Tramon Williams will likely be locked up on DeSean Jackson & Jeremy Maclin giving the Packers an edge there.  TE Brent Celek & WR Jason Avant are going to have to step up in his game for the Eagles to win it.

When the Packers have the ball:  The Packers are going to come out throwing the ball against the Eagles tomorrow.  The Eagles will have to get a good pass rush on Aaron Rodgers or he’s going to shred the defense due to the fact that he has four good WRs in Donald Driver, Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson and James Jones.  Brandon Jackson & John Kuhn will also likely get a few carries each seeing how the Eagles are allowing 110.4 yards rushing per game and 4.2 yards per carry.

PREDICTION:  PACKERS 28, EAGLES 20

Dallas Cowboys (5-10) vs. Philadelphia Eagles (10-5)

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,This Week's Matchup Report by admin on Friday 31 December 2010 at 1:47 am

The Eagles have clinched the NFC East and the #3 seed in the NFC playoffs which means they don’t have anything to play for.  Look for them to rest a lot of key players this weekend.  They have solid backup players so don’t expect the Eagles to lay down.  The Cowboys are 4-3 under Jason Garrett as the head coach and I expect them to have a big effort this Sunday.  The Eagles won the first game between these teams in Dallas just three weeks ago by the score of 30-27.  Here is a look at the matchups in this game:

When the Eagles have the ball:  The Eagles are going to likely give Michael Vick, Lesean McCoy and DeSean Jackson the week off.  That means that Kevin Kolb and Jerome Harrison are likely to draw starts at QB and RB this weekend.  The Eagles will likely still throw the ball a lot in this game as the Cowboys are giving up 251.4 yards passing per game.  Jerome Harrison will also likely get a heavy workload and I have a feeling that he’s going to have a big game.

When the Cowboys have the ball:  The Eagles better be ready to stop the run with Stephen McGee starting at QB for the Cowboys this weekend.  Felix Jones, Marion Barber and Tashard Choice are likely going to share the load so the front seven of the Eagles will have to be up for the challenge if they are going to win this game.  They must also keep McGee contained in the pocket because he’s really dangerous when rolling out to throw the ball.  Miles Austin, Jason Witten and Roy Williams give McGee nice options in the passing game so the Eagles need to get a lot of pressure on him.

PREDICTION:  EAGLES 27, COWBOYS 23

Minnesota Vikings (5-9) vs. Philadelphia Eagles (10-4)

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,This Week's Matchup Report by admin on Friday 24 December 2010 at 12:26 am

The only way this is going to be a close game is if the Eagles suffer a letdown after last weekend’s rousing victory over the Giants.  The Eagles are sitting atop the NFC East with a 10-4 record and they swept the Giants so if they win this game they will win the division.  The Eagles have won three games in a row and six of their last seven games.  The Vikings are on a two game losing streak as they have been punished by a combined score of 61-17 by the Bears & Giants.  The Vikings are only 1-5 on the road this season and it’s looking like rookie QB Joe Webb will be making his first NFL start of his career.  Here is a look at the matchups in this game:

When the Eagles have the ball:  The Vikings are allowing 206.6 yards passing per game so far this year and they have problems covering receivers deep.  That is a recipe for disaster in this game as Michael Vick loves throwing deep to Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson.  The Eagles won’t just throw though as Lesean McCoy and Michael Vick will try to take on the Vikings’ run D that is allowing 101.5 yards rushing per game and 3.9 yards per carry.

When the Vikings have the ball:  The Eagles need to stop Adrian Peterson and Toby Gerhart as the Vikings are averaging 121.9 yards rushing per game and 4.4 yards per carry.  If the Eagles stop the running game then the Vikings are done.  Rookie QB Joe Webb isn’t going to have much luck against a Eagles’ D that has 35 sacks and 23 interceptions so far this year.

PREDICTION:  EAGLES 34, VIKINGS 3

Philadelphia Eagles (9-4) vs. New York Giants (9-4)

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,This Week's Matchup Report by admin on Friday 17 December 2010 at 10:17 pm

The Eagles are 2-1 since beating the Giants 27-17 in Philly.  The Giants are 3-0 since their loss to the Eagles and they have outscored their opponents by a combined score of 76-30!  This game is for first place in the NFC East, so look for both teams to give it everything they have.  Here is a look at the matchups in this game:

When the Eagles have the ball:  The Eagles will have to give Michael Vick time to throw the ball because the Giants were effective at keeping him in the pocket in the first meeting.  The Giants are a better pass defense team than a run defense so if the Eagles were smart they would give the ball to Lesean McCoy more than usual in this game.  Opposing QBs only have a 73.1 QB Rating against the Giants and they already have 39 sacks, so Vick is going to have to make quick and smart decisions to succeed in this game.

When the Giants have the ball:  Rookie linebacker Jamar  Chaney is going to have to tighten up his chinstrap because the Giants are going to come out running the ball against a Eagles’ D that is allowing 103.5 yards rushing per game and 4.1 yards per carry.  If the Eagles can stop the running game they should be in good shape.  That is because they should be able to get enough pressure on Eli Manning to force him into making some mistakes.

PREDICTION:  GIANTS 30, EAGLES 27
