The Eagles swooped in out of nowhere and they inked 30-year old cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha to a 5-year, $60 million dollar deal.  Asomugha played in 14 games for the Raiders last year and he had 19 tackles and defensed 6 passes.  He has now played in 122 games in his first 8 years in the NFL and he has 310 tackles, 19 tackles for a loss, 2 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, 11 interceptions (he returned one of them 62 yards for a TD) and he has defensed 62 passes.  His numbers aren’t that impressive because he’s rarely challenged.  Adding Asomugha to Asante Samuel and Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie give the Eagles without a doubt the top cornerbacking unit in the entire NFL.

The Eagles have signed 30-year old TE Donald Lee to a 1-year deal.  Lee played in 15 games (6 starts) for the Packers last year and he caught 11 passes for 73 yards (6.6 avg) with 3 TD grabs.  Lee has now played in 124 games (64 starts) in his first 8 years in the NFL and he has caught 198 passes for 1,875 yards (9.5 avg) with 19 TD grabs.  This was a nice signing as Lee is a solid backup TE.

The Eagles have signed 27-year old WR/PR/KR Johnnie Lee Higgins to a 1-year deal.  Higgins played in 13 games (1 start) for the Raiders last year and he caught 10 passes for 103 yards (10.3 avg).  Higgins also returned 17 punts for 123 yards (7.2 avg) last year.  Higgins has now played in 60 games (11 starts) in his first four years in the NFL and he has caught 57 passes for 779 yards (13.7 avg) with 4 TD grabs and he has also carried the ball 7 times for 58 yards (8.3 ypc).  Higgins has also returned 115 punts for 973 yards (8.5 avg) with 3 TD returns and he has also returned 36 kickoffs for 842 yards (23.4 avg) so far in his NFL career.  The Eagles definately signed Higgins for his special teams work but he could also help out as a threat down the field because of his speed.

UPDATE:  (9/4/2011) – The Eagles have released Johnnie Lee Higgins.

The Eagles have released 28-year old fullback Leonard Weaver.  Weaver played in 1 game for the Eagles last year and he carried the ball 1 time for 0 yards (0.0 ypc).  Weaver played in 17 games (8 starts) in his two years with the Eagles and he carried the ball 71 times for 323 yards (4.1 ypc) with 2 TD runs.  He also caught 15 passes for 140 yards (9.3 avg) with 2 TD grabs for the Eagles.  Weaver made it to the Pro Bowl in 2009 for the Eagles but his serious injury in 2010 has cost him his job, and while that’s not fair….that’s the way the NFL rolls these days.

The Philadelphia Eagles acquire CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie from the Cardinals

Blogged under Big Eagles News,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Leaving Town,Trades by admin on Friday 29 July 2011 at 7:04 pm

The Eagles have acquired 25-year old cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a 2nd round pick in 2012 from the Eagles for 26-year old QB Kevin Kolb.  Rodgers- Cromartie played in all 16 games for the Cardinals last year and he had 44 tackles, defensed 17 passes and he also intercepted 3 passes (2 returned for TDs).  Cromartie has now played in 48 games in his first three years in the NFL and he has 136 tackles, 2 tackles for a loss, 3 forced fumbles, 13 interceptions (4 returned for TDs) and he defensed 61 passes.  Rodgers-Cromartie gives the Eagles a dominating pair of corners (Asante Samuel is on the other side).

Kevin Kolb played in 7 games (5 starts) for the Eagles last year and he completed 115 of 189 passes (60.8%) for 1,197 yards with 7 TD passes and 7 INTs (76.1 QB Rating).  Kolb also carried the ball 15 times for 65 yards (4.3 ypc) last year.  He played in 19 games (7 starts) in his four years with the Eagles and he completed 194 of 319 passes (60.8%) for 2,082 yards with 11 TD passes and 14 INTs (73.2 QB Rating).  Kolb also carried the ball 36 times for 64 yards (1.8 ypc) with 1 TD run for the Eagles.  Kolb was 3-4 (42.9%) as the starting QB for the Eagles.

This was a nice return for the Eagles as they are now better equipped to make a legit Super Bowl run in 2011.
