Philadelphia Eagles vs. New York Giants

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, This Week's Matchup Report, General by dawgpounded on Friday 28 September 2007 at 2:45 pm

The Eagles and Giants both got much needed wins last week and they clash on Sunday Night in an important game in New Jersey.  The Eagles exploded for 56 points last week while the Giants won with a goal line stand to achieve victory.

Donovan McNabb turned back the critics last week as he exploded with a perfect game (158.3 QB Rating) and he must be licking his chops watching game film of the Giants defense which is allowing 266.3 yards passing per game and opposing QBs have a 108.9 QB Rating!  The most important thing for the Eagles is the health of running back Brian Westbrook who has 514 yards combined rushing and receiving this season with 3 TDs!  Westbrook is a total mis-match for the outside linebackers of the Giants’ defense.  WR Kevin Curtis caught 11 passes for 221 yards last week with 3 TD receptions and McNabb will likely throw to him a lot again this week against the weak cornerbacks of the Giants.  WR Reggie Brown has been really quiet this season (5 rec, 64 yards) but he could be the secret weapon in this football game for the Eagles offense.

The Giants have been pretty good on offense this season and they will pose a big test for the defense of the Eagles.  Eli Manning has been playing with a sore right shoulder this season but he has thrown for 755 yards with 6 TD passes so far.  The Eagles are allowing 256.3 yards passing per game so the Giants will likely be throwing quite a bit in this ball game.  The Eagles do blitz from all angles and they have 14 sacks already this season and Manning tends to hurry the ball out of his hand when he gets hit a few times.  The Eagles have been outstanding against the run as they are only allowing 71.7 yards rushing per game and 3.5 yards per carry.  With that in mind the Giants will likely not run the ball too much this week.  With Derrick Ward (273 yards rushing, 5.1 ypc) hurting the Giants might have to turn to Reuben Droughns as the main runner against the Eagles.

PREDICTION:  This will be a very high scoring football game but in the end I think the Eagles will be able to stop the Giants a few times and win this football game.

The Eagles have lost starting tight end for at least a month after he has underwent a second hernia surgery.  Smith has caught 4 passes for 26 yards (6.5 avg) so far this season.  Smith will be replaced by Matt Schobel (3 rec, 29 yards) and rookie Brent Celek.  Keep an eye on Celek who was very impressive in the pre-season for the Eagles.

The Eagles woke up from the slumber they were in and they destroyed the Lions yesterday.  Donovan McNabb had a game for the ages as he completed 21 of 26 passes for 381 yards with 4 TD passes and 0 interceptions for a perfect 158.3 QB Rating.  Brian Westbrook had another outstanding game as he carried the ball 14 times for 110 yards (7.9 ypc) with 2 TD runs and he also caught 5 passes for 111 yards (22.2 avg) with 1 TD grab.  Correll Buckhalter carried the ball 7 times for 43 yards (6.1 ypc) with 1 TD run and rookie Tony Hunt carried the ball 1 time for 1 yard and a TD.  WR Kevin Curtis had the best game of his career as he caught 11 passes for 221 yards (20.1 avg) with 3 TD grabs.  The Eagles finished up with 173 yards rushing on 34 carries (5.1 ypc) and they completed 21 of 26 passes for 363 yards.

The defense was outstanding despite giving up a lot of yards as they sacked Jon Kitna 9 times yesterday.  DE Trent Cole was outstanding as he made 5 tackles and had 3 sacks.  DT Brodrick Bunkley also was good with 4 tackles and 2 sacks.  The Eagles only allowed 39 yards rushing on 12 carries (3.3 ypc) but the Lions did complete 29 of 46 passes for 393 yards.

Philadelphia Eagles vs. Detroit Lions

This is a game between two teams going in opposite directions.  The Lions are 2-0 and they have looked good doing it and the Eagles have started out 0-2 looking awful on offense with only 25 points in their two games.  Lions’ QB Jon Kitna promised a season of 10+ wins and he has delivered so far this year.  The Lions have allowed 6 sacks this season and the Eagles have a pair of good rushing ends in Trent Cole and Jevon Kearse so the Lions must win this battle as Kitna tends to make mistakes when pressured.  The Eagles must put a good rush on Kitna because the Lions have a huge advantage at WR as Shaun McDonald (161 yards), Roy Williams (131 yards), Mike Furrey (112 yards) and rookie Calvin Johnson (131 yards) have been near unstoppable.  Also, the Eagles have injury problems in the secondary as CB Lito Sheppard will miss this game.  The Lions must also mix in some running plays to throw the Eagles pass rush off a little bit.  RB Tatum Bell (101 yards rushing, 31 yards receiving) is very fast and he will challenge MLB Omar Gaither in the middle of the field.

Look for the Eagles to again play it safe on offense as they seem to be scared to let Donovan McNabb throw the ball down the field.  Look for plenty of dumpoffs to RB Brian Westbrook who has been the best player on offense for the Eagles this season.  The Eagles will need to have their receivers get tougher over the middle as Kevin Curtis (6 rec, 81 yards), Jason Avant (8 rec, 109 yards) and Reggie Brown (3 rec, 41 yards) have looked soft this season.  The Lions defense has been much better than advertised this season so the Eagles will likely have there hands full this Sunday.

PREDICTION:  I have seen no reason to believe that the Eagles are about to break out this Sunday with a huge performance.  I also think the Lions are probably playing a little bit over their heads and the Raiders and Vikings have nowhere near the offensive ability that the Eagles have.  I have a hunch that Jon Kitna will have another good game as the Lions spring a upset on the road and win again by a field goal.
